Central Lakes College's Occupational Skills Program raised $2,968 as a result of a fund-raiser for the Jessica Holmgren Scholarship.
The late Jessica Holmgren, a graduate of Pine River-Backus High School, was a student in the Occupational Skills Program at CLC during the 2001-02 school year.
This fund-raiser, which included a dinner and silent auction, was sponsored with assistance of the Jade Foundation on behalf of the CLC Theatre Department. One of the items in the silent auction was a handmade quilt designed by Diane Holmgren, Jessica's mother.
OSP and the Theatre Department have collaborated in a perennial stage production, "People Like Us," featuring students from both programs, as well as community actors in the Theatre for a Diverse Population initiative that has gained national recognition.
The event March 19 included a performance of "People Like Us," which has been scheduled for an April 26 encore for legislators and the public in the Capitol rotunda in St. Paul, thanks to arrangements coordinated through the Jade Foundation.
"People Like Us" was a 2005 Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival Region Five choice staged in January at the event in St. Louis, Mo. CLC was the first Minnesota two-year college to have a production invited to perform at this event.
