Local men's team takes championship

The men's volleyball team, Jolt of Brainerd/Staples, won the Class BB championship of the Minnesota Sports Federation volleyball tournament March 23 and 24 at Redwood Falls.

The Jolt team defeated Ace Construction out of Owatonna for the championship in two straight games. Jolt was 15-2 in the tournament.

Platisha MVP of boys' hockey team

Senior J.P. Platisha has been named most valuable player of the Brainerd Warriors boys' hockey team.

Other awards:

Offensive player of year, Platisha; defensive player of year, Jon Weston; rookie of the year, Morgan Shepherd; most improved, Mike Solinger; Warrior Award, Tim Hanske; Hoffman Award/hardest worker, David Quisberg.

All-conference, Platisha, Matt Burris; all-conference honorable mention, Weston; 2002-03 captains Jason Roberts, Tony Parrish.

Zauhar boys' basketball MVP

Mike Zauhar has been named most valuable player of the Brainerd Warriors boys' basketball team.

Jake Phillips and Paul Tuchscherer were named captains for 2002-2003.

Brainerd's Matt Urbanek was named Section 8, Class 4A coach of the year.

Registration for Baxter programs open

Registration is under way for all Baxter summer recreation programs.

Mustang, Bronco and Pony Babe Ruth baseball players must register by April 19.

Petite and Junior softball players must register by May 17.

Spring soccer league players (K-6) must register by April 17.

Spring tennis for grades 4-5 must register by April 12.

Nisswa registration scheduled April 18

Registration for Nisswa Parks and Recreation baseball programs is scheduled April 18 at Nisswa Community Center.

Registration for T-ball and Little Sluggers is at 6:30 p.m. Registration for other teams is 7:30 p.m.

Traveling team tryouts April 20

Tryouts for the Brainerd 12-and-under traveling baseball team will be 1:30 p.m. April 20, weather permitting, at Memorial Park.

Alternate time is 1:30 p.m. April 21. The team will participate in a Brainerd tournament and two out-of-town tournaments.

Weightlifting awards given out

Travis Zins was named the best lifter in the men's division at the Minnesota Senior, School-age, Junior championships March 30 at Brainerd High School.

Stacie Blaskowski was named the best woman lifter, Giordano Madison the best school-age male lifter and Craig Ancier the top lifter for the junior men.

The Red Wing women's team took the top team honors with Twin City Barbell placing second. In the men's team category, Twin City Barbell was first, followed by CODP and Red Wing. CODP was first in the school age men's team division and the Armstrong Falcons placed first in the junior men's team category.
