ST. PAUL (AP) -- The Minnesota Republican Party wants the St. Paul Pioneer Press to demand that a campaign ad by Sen. Paul Wellstone be pulled from the air.
Two years ago, the newspaper sued to stop then-U.S. Sen. Rod Grams from including images of a Pioneer Press article in a commercial without permission. Republican officials say the Wellstone ad, paid for by the state Democratic party, does the same thing, and they want equal treatment.
"Where's the lawsuit?" asked GOP spokesman Bill Walsh.
Pioneer Press Editor Vicki Gowler said the situations are different.
In the Grams lawsuit, which was settled after the election, the newspaper claimed the Republican senator had infringed on its copyright and brought its neutrality into question.
Gowler, who wasn't editor when the lawsuit against Grams was filed, said the Wellstone ad is different because it doesn't feature the newspaper's masthead, and uses a complete and accurate quote from the paper.
