ONAMIA -- Country superstar Kenny Rogers will help Grand Casino Mille Lacs usher in its 10th anniversary celebration with a pair of performances today.
Unless you already have tickets, however, Rogers' 6:30 and 9 p.m. shows in the casino's convention center may be off limits. Both shows are sold out, said a casino spokeswoman.
But the casino is offering other entertainment that might be of interest, including an 8:30 p.m. fireworks display and a "traditional anniversary party complete with cake and balloons," starting at 8:45 p.m.
To heighten the fireworks experience, the casino will hand out 3-D glasses, the spokeswoman said.
"Grand Casino Mille Lacs opened the first week of April 1991 and since then we have experienced a decade of tremendous success," said casino general manager Rob Johnson.
"We wanted to celebrate our anniversary with a great party for our guests, and we're thrilled that Kenny Rogers will help us celebrate," the manager said.
Rogers, who has performed at the casino in the past, has become one of country music's biggest crossover successes of all time.
Over his five-decade career, the singer has released 59 albums, with sales of 100 million units worldwide, and has won four Grammys, 11 People's Choice Awards, 18 American Music Awards and several Country Music Association awards.
Best known for "Lucille," "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town" and other major hits, Rogers released his latest hit singles in 1999 on the "She Rides Wild Horses" album. "The Greatest" and "Buy Me a Rose" rose to the top of the singles charts, while the "Horses" CD hit platinum levels in sales.
The singer also has appeared in several television and motion picture roles, including the "Gambler" mini-series inspired by his song of the same name.
