Randy Mertes of Brainerd won his 10th weightlifting title in the Minnesota State Championships March 31 at the East Side YMCA in St. Paul.
Mertes, competing in the 207-pound class, lifted 220 pounds in the snatch and 286 in the clean and jerk. He qualified in the age 40 and over division for the world masters weightlifting championships Sept. 23-29 at Kefelonia, Greece.
Phil Markert of Lake Shore, competing at 231 pounds in the age 65-69 division, set a Minnesota masters state record in the clean and jerk with a lift of 166 pounds.
Pierz girls on conference team
Pierz junior Sheila Stegora and sophomore Allyson Kloss have been named to the All-Central Minnesota Conference girls' basketball team.
Teammates on the second team include senior Missy Girtz and junior Shelley Boser.
Many Pearson and Katie Huschle of Eden Valley-Watkins were named co-most valuable players. Steve Christians of Kimball was named coach of the year.
Weather postpones area sporting events
Several area athletic events scheduled the remainder of this week have been postponed or canceled because of unplayable conditions.
The Central Lakes College baseball doubleheader at Virginia against Mesabi Friday has been postponed along with Saturday's doubleheader against Vermilion at Ely.
The Raiders' softball doubleheader at Austin against Riverland Friday has been postponed along with Saturday's doubleheader at Worthington against Minnesota West. CLC's softball doubleheader April 3 at Willmar against Ridgewater was postponed until May 7.
Brainerd Warriors events postponed include today's baseball game against Rocori until May 17, girls' golf April 10 at Little Falls (no makeup date) and girls' golf April 12 at Rocori (no makeup date). Boys' golf April 12 at Alexandria has been canceled.
Friday's baseball game at Sauk Rapids against Little Falls has been postponed (no makeup date).
