The task of writing about a child waiting for a mentor at Kinship Partners is rotated among the six staff members each week. Today is my turn.
I opened the draw containing files of waiting kids and begin thumbing through the 36 files looking for inspiration. As usual, boys outnumber girls waiting for a mentor. Today 26 boys are waiting compared to only 10 girls. Which boy to write about? How can I convince some men that this child needs them? It's a difficult task.
Kinship Partners desperately needs more people and especially men in Crow Wing and southern Cass counties with a passion to mentor children. Please ask yourself this question: Do you want to make a lasting difference in your community? If the answer is yes then there is no better way to accomplish this than by mentoring a child.
Here's a prime example of a boy who needs a male mentor. Lance is a shy, laidback and fun-loving 11-year-old from Brainerd. He lives in a single parent household, struggles a little in school and suffers from lack of attention. More than anything Lance needs a listening ear and someone who can help boost his self-esteem. What he needs is you, someone he can depend on and someone who will show him that he does matter and is special.
Can you imagine yourself spending a couple of hours a week hanging out with a young man full of life and desperately wanting to learn about guy stuff? There is not better time than now for you to share your interests with a young man like Lance who really wants a positive, consistent and caring man in his life.
