Federal Emergency Management Agency recommends storm supplies should contain:
* Flashlight and extra batteries.
* Portable battery-operated radio and extra batteries.
* First aid kit and manual.
* Emergency food and water.
* Nonelectric can opener.
* Essential medicines.
* Cash and credit cards.
* Sturdy shoes.
FEMA also suggests people familiarize themselves with escape routes, know how to turn off their utilities, identify a meeting place for family members, develop an emergency communication plan and choose an out-of-state relative to serve as a family contact.
If a pet has to be left at home, leave the pet in a windowless room with three days of air, water and food. Never leave a pet tied up outside. And put a notice on the door indicating where the pet is in the house and a number where the pet owner can be reached.
