Area racquetball players place at state

Several area players participated in the Minnesota state singles racquetball tournament at the Northwest Athletic Club in Brooklyn Center last weekend.

Taking home top honors were the following:

Kelsey Anderson -- Second place in girls' 16 and under; Kari Anderson -- Third in women's 35; Sue Kieffer -- First in women's 45; Brady Prince -- First in boys' 14 and under, second in boys' 16 and under; Angie Roby -- Second in women's open, second in women's 25.

Darrin Prince, who did not participate in the tournament, was awarded the most improved male player of the year by the Minnesota Racquetball Association.

Owen homers in Beavers' defeat

EMPORIA, Kan. -- Brainerd High School graduate Derek Owen hit a two-run homer in the Bemidji State baseball team's 5-4 loss to Emporia State University Sunday. On Saturday, in a 5-3 loss to Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Mo., Owen scored two runs. The losing pitcher was Brad Czech of Little Falls, who allowed eight hits and struck out four.

Tamasy scores game-winning goal

Julius Tamasy of Brainerd scored the game-winning goal in overtime to help the North team to a 3-2 victory in the championship game of the Minnesota Super Series at the Eden Prairie Ice Center last weekend.

Tamasy also had an assist in the championship game. It was the first time the North has ever won the series, which involves minor squirts ages 10-11.

Select team tryouts scheduled

Tryouts for the girls' varsity Select team are scheduled noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Academy of Holy Angels in Richfield.

Tryouts for the varsity boys' Minnesota Select team are scheduled noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at Holy Angels.

Zauhar to speak to boosters

Brainerd Warriors fast-pitch softball coach Mike Zauhar will be the speaker at the Brainerd Sports Boosters Club meeting noon Thursday on the second floor of Central Lakes College.

Pine Meadows golf league to meet

A captains meeting for the men's twilight golf league at Pine Meadows is set for 7 p.m. Thursday in the Pine Meadows club house.

Weather postpones area events

Monday's high school softball game between Bertha-Hewitt and Verndale has been postponed until 4 p.m. April 23.

On Tuesday, the Central Lakes College Raiders baseball game against Northland was postponed.

The Great River Conference track and field meet, including Aitkin, was cancelled.

In high school baseball, the Milaca at Pierz game was cancelled and the Laporte at Verndale game was postponed until 4:30 p.m. April 23.
