Special Olympics athletic team forms
The Brainerd Area Lakers is a newly organized Special Olympics adult-based athletic team.
The first sport offered was basketball with practice starting in early January. More than 20 athletes participated each week and traveled to the Area 5 Special Olympics competition in February in Wadena.
Currently, athletes are gearing up for the Area 5 Athletics competition to be held May 9 in Long Prairie. Events offered include running, relays, race walking, standing long jump and softball throw, among others. Practices are held 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays in the Brainerd High School gym.
