The Little Falls-based Initiative Foundation awarded the Todd County Multicultural Community Liaison Office a $10,000 grant to employ a full-time liaison to Latinos in Todd County.
The new liaison will act as a translator and cultural mentor to the community's Spanish-speaking residents. The liaison also will help organize a membership meeting of all county residents, reinstate the summer reading program, look into the possibility of a tutoring program for school children and mobilize volunteers from the Latino community.
Todd County Multicultural Liaison Office Director Tim King said the county had 78 Latino residents in 1997 who spoke Spanish predominantly. The number has grown to more than 1,400.
The Todd County Multicultural Liaison Office is currently accepting applications for the liaison position.
