The 2004 track and field season was a year of firsts for the Brainerd Warrior girls' team.
Brainerd won its first Central Lakes Conference and its first Section 8, Class 2A titles.
In addition, the Warriors repeated as Section 8-3A True Team champions, finished eighth in the state True Team meet and won the North Subsection 8-2A title.
Head coach Geri Skogen expects the 2005 Warriors to be competitive but isn't about to apply pressure to repeat what Brainerd did last year. Many skilled individuals have graduated, leaving positions to fill.
"My goal is to be very competitive," Skogen said, "give kids a good track experience and be as good as we can be at the end of the season. We lost too many valuable athletes that were multiple-event kids, high-place point people."
Head coach -- Geri Skogen, 19th year
2004 finish -- First in CLC; first in North Subsection 8, Class 2A; first in section; first in True Team section; eighth in True Team state meet
Returning state meet participants -- Taylor Hartje (triple jump), Katy Posterick (4x800 relay).
Assistant coaches -- Dan Clabo, Kris Smith, Ali Ohe, Toni Balsley, Carl Schirmer, Steve Kimble
Among the graduates are most valuable athletes Maria Swanson and Ashley Schmolke. Swanson was all-state in shot put, finishing seventh in the state. Schmolke was an all-state runner on the fifth-place 4x800-meter relay with Audree Goodew and Christina Roberts. Long jumper Missy Eiesland also was a state participant.
Brainerd returns 42 letterwinners, including two state meet performers, section champion Taylor Hartje in triple jump and Katy Posterick from the 4x800.
Hartje is projected to compete in triple, long and high jumps and the 300 hurdles.
"Her experience at state will help," Skogen said of Hartje. "Any time you're at state for the first time in an individual event it's kind of overwhelming. There are more nerves there. You're all alone. You don't have all your teammates warming up.
"Taylor wants to get back and place at state."
Posterick is projected to run the 400 and 800 as well as relays.
"We hope it gave her good confidence," Skogen said of Posterick's state meet. "She's a beautiful runner. With state experience she can succeed in relays or individually."
Brainerd also hopes its captains contribute to its success. In addition to Hartje, captains are seniors Jenni Beilke, Ally Hartje and Claire Northway.
Beilke is projected to run the 100 and 200 dashes and relays.
"Jenni had a great season last year individually," Skogen said. "Through her soccer success, and her track experience last year, I think she will be a tougher competitor. I believe she was a tougher competitor last year than she was the year before and faster. She's a great leader."
Ally Hartje will likely compete in the jumps, 300 hurdles and relays.
"Having her sister at the state meet last year, they made a pact they both would go this year," Skogen said. "At the section it could have gone either way, with Taylor or Ally winning. Taylor hit her (triple) jump, Ally didn't."
Northway will run the 100 and 300 hurdles and relays.
"Claire's a very disciplined athlete," Skogen said. "She knows what she wants to do, and has the capacity to get it done. She's very focused. She's a good technician. You need to be when you're doing the hurdles."
