An overdose of prescription medication caused the deaths of two people found March 6 at a Verndale home, law enforcement officials announced.
Jeanie Marie Oconnor, 45, and Steven Roger Hanebuth, 46, were found after their landlord asked police to perform a welfare check at their residence on Fifth Avenue Northwest.
Oconnor and Hanebuth were last seen Feb. 15 and it is believed their bodies had been in the residence more than a week.
Wadena County Sheriff's Coroner/Investigator Tom Speed reported the findings Tuesday, Verndale Police Chief Jeff Jares said. Wadena County Sheriff Mike Carr said the manner of death had not been determined but foul play had been ruled out.
Jares said the investigation was concluded and the residence has been released back to the owner.
"The Verndale Police Department is closing this case and it will stay closed unless we're informed of anything different," Jares said.
Hanebuth and Oconnor were living at the residence for some time and nothing unusual had been noted about them, Jares said previously, and the house was orderly and neat when law enforcement investigated March 6.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension assisted in the investigation.
