It's good to see that The Dispatch has seen fit to limit at least some of the anonymous (not unanimous) comments it has been publishing in Vox Pop. (Vox Pop intro, March 30). What is strange, however, is the conclusion that comments of questionable veracity concerning local and state politics are acceptable, and that only those concerning national politics are off limits. Is it possible that people have been using Vox Pop to further their own local political agendas by making "factual statements that were misleading or difficult to substantiate?" I think so.
So, way to go, Dispatch. I concur with your conclusion that people should be encouraged to use Open Forum to state their views. It's amazing how the accountability that comes with signing one's name tempers one's comments. Now, if you would just take it a step further and encourage your readers to shed the cloak of anonymity and back up all of their comments with a signature, you may have fewer "factual statements that were misleading or difficult to substantiate." to run down and verify.
