Elaine C. Smith, 71, of Pequot Lakes, died Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at her home after a courageous battle with leukemia.
Elaine Clara Smith was born Nov. 3, 1932, in St. Paul to Ernest and Erna (Guse) Pirk. She graduated from Humboldt High School in St. Paul in 1951. She and her husband, Lee, were childhood sweethearts and were united in marriage Sept. 25, 1954. They were to celebrate their 50th anniversary this year.
While her children were young, Elaine worked as a nurse's aid in the St. Paul School System. Later, she worked for Buckbee Mears and St. Paul Ramsey Hospital as a secretary. Shile residing in the St. Paul area, Elaine was a member and former Worthy Matron of Carmel Chapter No. 127, Order of the Eastern Star.
In 1993, she and Lee retired to Clark Lake in Nisswa, Minn. In 2001, they moved to a townhome in Pequot Lakes. Elaine was an active member of the Brainerd Women's Shrine Auxiliary and most recently held the position of membership chairperson. Elaine enjoyed sewing and crafts, playing piano, bird watching and using the computer. Since 1993, Elaine and Lee enjoyed playing cribbage and Sequence together almost every morning.

Also the care and compassion received from family, friends and neighbors was greatly appreciated.
She is survived by her husband Lee; her daughter, Linda and her husband Tim Garvey, of Woodbury; her son, Lee Jr. and his wife, Karen, of Roseville; her grandchildren, Adrianna and Michelle Smith and Robert Garvey; her stepsister, Jane Zepeda, of South St. Paul; and four nieces, Sue (Bud) Hanson, Patti Matthews, Judy (Dennis) Creen, and Jean (Dave) Nyberg.
She was preceded in death by her parents; stepbrother, William Pirk, and most recently, her sister Betty Messenger.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 3 at Grace United Methodist Church in Pequot Lakes with the Rev. Dan Doughty officiating. Friends may visit from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 2, at Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter. Friends may also visit Saturday morning from 10-11 a.m. at the church. Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Nisswa. Memorials are preferred.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Brenny Funeral Chapel of Baxter.
