Brainerd School District's financial picture has taken on a rosier look as local cost slashing and the expected return of state funding cuts took effect.

30 years ago (1971)

When Brainerd basketball fans by the hundreds welcomed the Warrior Basketball team home Sunday, they were showing appreciation to a group of boys who have demonstrated what desire can do. Brainerd will long remember its 1971 High School Basketball Squad as a group of boys who never gave up and by their determination brought new credit to their school and community.

40 years ago (1961)

A 1,000-pound plus safe that has been in the Elks Hotel for the past 30 or 40 years was removed yesterday with a mobile crane. It will be turned over to a local safe expert for renovation and then will be given to a charitable group.

60 years ago (1941)

A new single-game record for the Lake Region Alleys was set last night by Les Volkl, who blazed a 279 in his first game.

80 years ago (1921)

The following funny local appeared in the Pequot Review and gives evidence that Col. Vest Auctioneer of Pequot, has a dog that eats children. The ad reads: "Dandy bird dog for sale. Will eat anything, and is very fond of children."

100 years ago (1901)

-- Miss Nelfie Alderman entertained a party of young people on Monday evening, the occasion being her 15th birthday anniversary.

-- An ice cream social will be given by the Salvation Army on Saturday evening. All are invited. Tickets 10.
