Like a faithful church-goer caught without her purse when the collection plate went around, the Baxter City Council felt remiss a year ago because it had not budgeted very much money for the area's Fourth of July celebration.
This year council members stated their intent to increase the city's contribution from $500 to $3,500. That's a decision that will be much appreciated by the organizers of the huge summer celebration and by the Baxter residents who enjoy the parade, fireworks and other festivities that draw an estimated 35,000 people each year.
Back in June the council members agreed their $500 donation wasn't enough but couldn't increase their donation at that point.
"Five hundred dollars is a drop in the bucket to things like that," council member Craig MacDonald said last summer. "Everyone in Baxter who isn't out of town goes there, too."
The Baxter City Council members weren't just grandstanding when they voiced support for the Fourth of July celebration. They backed it up this year by directing city staff members to find $3,500 for this year's festivities.
Even with all of the volunteer help Brainerd Community Action receives, the cost of producing the annual celebration is pretty steep. Those who would like to make their own donation may do so by mailing them to Fourth of July Celebration, C/O Community Action, 501 Laurel Street, Brainerd, Minn., 56401.
