BAXTER - The Brainerd School District and Community Education will host the fifth annual chess tournament for students in kindergarten through 12th grade Saturday at the Forestview Middle School cafetorium.
As many as 100 students from five area public schools, including home-schooled students, are expected to participate. Chess teams from Alexandria, Brainerd, Parkers Prairie, Pillager and McGregor have been regularly competing in and hosting regional chess competitions for area students. Many of these schools also offer classes or clubs for kids to learn and improve their chess skills.
Like traditional extracurricular sports, the clubs and competitions allow for fun and an opportunity to learn and practice sportsmanship. Chess also helps develop spatial skills, planning and patience.
Saturday's tournament will be a five-round "Swiss Style" tournament, with overall team awards and individual awards for each age group: Kindergarten through third grade, fourth through sixth grade and seventh through 12th grade. Play begins at 10 a.m., with each round scheduled to be completed within an hour. All students in kindergarten through 12th grade are welcome to participate.
Cost is $10 for pre-registration and $15 at the door. For more information or to pre-register, contact Brainerd Community Education at 454-6954.
