Gander Mountain expected to open in early July

Gander Mountain is expected to hire 100 people, with about 30 percent as full-time jobs, before it opens in early July.
The outdoor retailer is opening in 94,000 square feet in the former Wal-Mart store on Edgewood Drive in Baxter. Matt Lukens, Gander Mountain public relations representative, said Gander Mountain hopes to sublease the additional 25,000 square feet inside the store that it is not using.

Was founded in Wilmot, Wis., in 1960 by Bob Sturgis, a former field and stream buyer for Marshall Fields & Co. in Chicago.
Was named by Sturgis after Wisconsin's Gander Mountain, which was one of his favorite outdoor spots.

The Gander Mountain store will include all-terrain vehicles sales and service, archery shooting lanes and full-service shop, an in-store gunsmith and purchase and sale of used firearms, hunting and fishing license sales, and a live bait shop. When it opens, Gander Mountain will give away 5,000 gun locks. A Gander Lodge meeting space will be available to area organizations free of charge.
Expectations are for a Fourth of July weekend opening, but that will depend on construction efforts. The former Wal-Mart will be transformed inside and out. Gander Mountain has two store sizes. The new one in Baxter is the big-box style. It will offer expanded apparel for men, women and children and cabin decor amid its traditional retail inventory of hunting, fishing, camping and boating merchandise.
Lukens said the decision to come to the Brainerd lakes area market was based on a shared enthusiasm. This is Gander Mountain's first new Minnesota store since 2003.
"It's a market that really shows a passion for the outdoors and the tradition Gander Mountain really believes in," Lukens said. The store will feature hunting and fishing license sales.
