"One is not born into the world to do everything but to do something ..." -- Henry David Thoreau.
One person could not possibly take on the task of spending time with all the children of the surrounding communities who could benefit from one to one attention from an adult. But one volunteer at a time is matched with one child and the relationship that often develops is the something that makes a difference.
The population of the Brainerd area and surrounding communities is growing at a rapid rate. Along with the increase in population are children in single-parent homes who hunger for the opportunity to become familiar with the new community and make a friend among the new faces. Volunteers are needed to expose children to the many opportunities and activities that are available in our area.
Ten children were recently added to our waiting lists. They have relocated to the area. They are from single-parent homes. Their backgrounds are varied but their needs are very similar. Tania, Tandy, Desha, Danny and Dante have not yet been to a movie theater or to a lake to go fishing.
Their reasons for wanting Kinship partners range from finding someone who has a basketball and would shoot a few hoops, to spending a few hours a week in a house that is quiet. Is there something you could do to make a difference in the life of a child?
Currently there are 150 partnerships in the Brainerd, Crosby and Pequot Lakes area because volunteers have believed there is something they could offer the children. There are almost 50 children on the waiting list, but we truly believe there are just as many community individuals, couples and families who are asking what is the something they could do ... just call one of our offices and we will let you know.
Call Brainerd at 829-4606, Crosby at 546-7308 or Pequot Lakes at 568-4015. We would be pleased to answer any questions or provide any information you may need.
