Gov. Jesse Ventura signed into law on Friday a bill naming the Highway 371 bypass in memory of Former Gov. C. Elmer Anderson.
The bill was introduced in the House by Rep. Steve Wenzel, DFL-Little Falls, and in the Senate by Sen. Don Samuelson, DFL-Brainerd.
The bypass will link Highway 371 from a point south of Brainerd to a point in Baxter. The state will erect memorial signs along the road.
Anderson, who died at age 85 on Jan. 22, 1998, was also a former mayor of both Brainerd and Nisswa.
He was elected lieutenant governor in 1938 and served 11 years longer than any other holder of that office. He became governor when Gov. Luther Youngdahl was appointed to a federal judgeship in 1951. Anderson was elected in his own right in 1952 and served until 1955.
