PINE RIVER -- The Pine River Area Sanitary District recently received a certificate of commendation from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency at its annual awards ceremony in St. Paul.
The award is based on meeting all requirements of the National Pollution Discharge Elimination Standards set forth by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The Pine River Area Sanitary District is managed, operated and maintained by Veolia Water North America Operating Services (formerly USFilter). Mike Oates, operations supervisor, accepted the award for the sanitary district.
Todd Allen is project manager. Board members are Chairman Alan Johnson, Wilson Township; Vice Chairman Mike Mills, Chickamaw Beach; commissioners Merril Nelson and Martin Ruich, Pine River; and Marv Ryan, Barclay Township.
In the past three years the Pine River Area Sanitary District has received four operations awards, including the Central States Water Environment Association Treatment Facility Operations Award in 2003.
Try climbing wall at Deep Portage April 17
HACKENSACK -- Deep Portage will offer a chance to climb the 30-foot climbing wall 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. April 17. Cost is $10 for adults and children.
The wall has a number of routes for beginner and advanced climbers. All instruction and equipment will be provided. Participants must be at least 8 and accompanied by an adult if younger than 18.

Bird banding demo, dinner and program set at Deep Portage
HACKENSACK -- The Friends of Deep Portage are sponsoring a bird banding demonstration, dinner and program beginning at 2:30 p.m. April 24 at the Main Hall of the reserve.
Halibut steak, wild rice pilaf, Riviera vegetable blend, salad and raspberry cake will be served at 5 p.m. in the Heritage Hall.
The program, featuring retired Rear Adm. Hank McKinney of the Navy's former Commander Submarine Force Pacific Fleet, will begin at 5:45 p.m. Deep Portage staff will offer a youth activity for ages 6 to 16 during the program.
Cost is $10 for adults, $7 for ages 6-12 and free for children under 6.
