Crawford wins region boxing title

Kolyn Crawford of Brainerd claimed the 139-pound championship in the Region 4 Golden Gloves boxing tournament Saturday at the Wadena Armory.

Crawford beat Matt Pearson of Wadena for the championship. Crawford advances to the Northern Minnesota Boxoff 7:30 p.m. April 1 at the Wadena Armory. Boxers from Wadena, Duluth, St. Cloud, Brainerd, Willmar, Fergus Falls, Detroit Lakes, Leech Lake and Sebeka-Nevis will participate.

Champions from the boxoff qualify for the Upper Midwest tournament at the Medina Ballroom. Semifinals are 3 p.m. April 9 and the finals 7 p.m. April 10.

In other region bouts, Lacey Kuschel of Nimrod decisioned Carol Bowman of St. Cloud at 128 pounds.

Shayne Milbrandt, 126, of Sebeka beat Ryan Olson of Detroit Lakes.

Jesse Ruiz of Willmar beat Josh Bahls of Wadena for the heavyweight title.

Guy Schoon, 156, boxes Andy Kolle of Fergus Falls at 2 p.m. Saturday at Cass Lake for the title.

Dan Soukup, 165, of Brainerd scored a second-round RSC over Eli Peterson of Detroit Lakes in the semifinals. Soukup will box Scott Kelm of St. Cloud at Cass Lake on Saturday to determine the champion.

Unopposed champions were Zach Walters of Fergus Falls at 178, David Bialke of St. Cloud at 125, James Boyd of Fergus Falls at 119 and Geraldo Valdez of St. Cloud at 147.

Nate Ott of Wadena and John Ortiz of Detroit Lakes will box at Wadena on April 1 to determine the region superheavyweight champion.

Andy Kolle of Fergus Falls was selected the region's best boxer, Crawford was named the fightingest fighter and Pearson was awarded the sportsmanship trophy.

In junior/novice bouts Saturday, Ryan Buseth of Fergus Falls beat Shayne Wegsheid of Wadena at 72 pounds.

Jose Solis of Willmar won at 122 as he defeated Andy Foster of Detroit Lakes.

Chris Knudson of Detroit Lakes beat Dewayne Steward of Wadena at 147.

Luis Solis of Willmar defeated Dustin Comeau of Wadena at 85.

Blair Koenig of Detroit Lakes beat Ricky Aulie of Brainerd at 132.

Tony Miller of St. Cloud beat Cody McManigle of Wadena at 99 pounds.
