Some of the best graduate assistant coaches in St. Cloud State University history worked for the Huskies in 1978-79.
Lynn Peterson and John Carlson were graduate assistants for the Huskies' basketball team that season. Peterson and Jim Lind were graduate assistants for the SCSU football team. Each has gone on to succeed in a different area of the state and country.
Peterson has won 500 games as head coach of the Staples-Motley boys' basketball team, taking the Cardinals to 10 state tournaments. Carlson is a highly successful head coach of Litchfield's boys' basketball and boys' tennis teams. Peterson and Carlson square off 9 p.m. Friday when S-M and Litchfield play in the semifinals of the Class AA state tournament at Williams Arena in Minneapolis.
Lind, now an assistant coach with the Seattle Seahawks, has coached in the NFL for many years.
"Jim Lind was linebackers coach of the Green Bay Packers," Carlson said. "We had some awfully good, quality people go through St. Cloud State, of which Lynn is one of the best.
"Lynn's coaching style and technique were already established when he got there. He's very disciplined. He's very hard-working. He covers all the bases. He's very demanding. I'm sure he picked up some things there, as all of us do working with different people."
Peterson had coached eight years at Deer Creek High School when he decided to work on his master's degree at SCSU.
"We have taken a couple scouting trips together," Peterson said of he and Carlson. "Obviously, we knew each other well enough. We're good friends."
