Three Brainerd School District fifth-graders were recently named winners of the 2002 Sertoma National Heritage Essay Contest by the Brainerd Noon Sertoma Club.
The winners were Devin Larson, Baxter School, first; Stephanie Morgan, Lincoln School, second; and Katie Klasky, Baxter School, third.
The topic was "When is freedom worth fighting for?
The Sertoma Club and Liberty Savings Bank presented savings bonds to the top three winners in the amount of $200 for first place, $150 for second place and $100 for third place.
Teachers of the winning students are Ed Koehler (Devin Larson), Patty Younghans (Stephanie Morgan) and Pam Warren (Katie Klasky).
Honorable mention and a cash prize of $20 from the club and the bank went to Whitney Joyce, Baxter; Emmet Umlauf, Riverside; Jesse Anderson, Lowell; Taryn Ruttger, Nisswa; Kaylee Gill, Baxter; Ronald Enno, Harrison; and Travis Boyd, Baxter.
Judges for the contest were Bruce Heilman (chairman), Reed Campbell, Robert Ehrich, Sandra Ehrich, Keith Lunneborg, Brenda Meech, Karen Owen, Jim Potvin, Pam Sachs and Elyssa Weber.
