The battle of the brass
The inside story of the battle between Adm. William J. Fallon, former head of U.S. Central Command, and Gen. David H. Petraeus, the U.S. commander in Iraq, may be studied by military historians years hence. The animosity between the two top military men was personal (Petraeus reportedly thought Fallon was trying to micromanage him).

OTHER OPINION: Mortgages
It must pain Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson Jr., formerly the chief executive of one of Wall Street's biggest investment banks, to call for more government regulation of lenders and their facilitators. And yet that's what the sub-prime mortgage meltdown and credit crunch have forced him to do.

A Bear Stearns market
Panic is old hat on Wall Street. Rarely before, however, has there been a crisis so comprehensive as this one. It first materialized last summer in the shape of a disturbance in the low-rated, or subprime, mortgage market. "Contained," the regulatory establishment hopefully pronounced. But it has blazed across markets and time zones, with central bankers, politicians and Treasury functionaries in hot and, to date, futile pursuit.

Open Forum: Legislation protects illegal aliens
Did you know that Minneapolis and St. Paul have sanctuary policies that prevent their police officers from asking about immigration status or enforcing our immigration laws? Did you know that these sanctuary policies are allowing illegal aliens to freely enjoy YOUR benefits without fear of deportation? Did you know that such policies cause huge criminal, legal, financial problems that degrade your life as legitimate Minnesotans? The recent school bus crash in Cottonwood should have been a grim wake up call to our legislators to reverse this irresponsible and misguided mind set.

OTHER OPINION: SURVEILLANCE
Here's a 21st century twist on a conspiracy theorist's adage: Just because you're paranoid, that doesn't mean you're not being followed electronically. News outlets have brimmed with tales of Web sites, cable TV companies, Internet service providers and even the government quietly monitoring what you do and say.
