RED LAKE, Minn. (AP) - Authorities were at the scene of a fatal shooting at Red Lake High School. Students said four people were killed, and broadcast reports had as many as six people dead.
The FBI confirmed a shooting with fatalities at the school, but didn't provide any other details. A news conference was planned for Monday evening in the Twin Cities.
Students and a teacher at the scene, Diane Schwanz, gave the names of four people they said were killed in the attack. They identified a male student as the shooter.
Schwanz told the Bemidji Pioneer that the shooter tried to break down a door to get into a room where some students were.
"I just got on the floor and called the cops," Schwanz said. "I was still just half-believing it."
Tom Lyons, chief deputy for Beltrami County, said as many as 14 people were injured in the shooting, which happened around 3 p.m. Lyons said a suspect was in custody, but he had no other details.
Four victims were being treated at North Country Regional Hospital in Bemidji, said Sherri Birkeland, the hospital's vice president of development and planning. She had no specific information on the victims or the shooting.
Other victims were expected at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, N.D., said an administrator who declined to give her name.
