Today as I was reading the Sunday paper over a cup of coffee I came across the article "Hiking with Hal" and was sad to see Mr. Anderson was hanging up his writing pen.
For about 20 years my husband and I have followed and enjoyed the article. We would comment on what Farley, the Anderson's golden retriever, would be up to and found all of Hal's articles to be informative and personal.
Then about 10 years ago, shortly after I opened my boarding kennel we got the pleasure of "sitting" for Farley when Hal and Doris were out of town. It was then I got to know the soft-spoken, gentle Hal Anderson, and his wonderful retriever Farley.
Over the years Hal and Farley would come, and Hal and I talked about the birds, the bears, even Christmas trees. Farley just sat patiently waiting to join his buddies in the kennel room. One Sunday afternoon Hal and Farley came for his scheduled stay and Farley seemed very old and tired. About two hours after Hal left, Farley peacefully joined all the other old and tired dogs in Critter Heaven. Bill and I buried Farley out in the back woods with Hal and Doris's blessing.
I still think about old Farley and what a good companion he was to Hal and Doris. But I must say I did find another "Hiking Pal" for the Anderson's. Charlie is a big energetic teenager. I think he will settle down with time, and he does keep Hal and Doris active.
The Brainerd area will miss the weekly "Hiking with Hal." Many thanks to the Anderson's for the wonderful information they have shared with us over the years.
Clinton and his oath
After reading the editorial "Harsh Words," I felt compelled to respond to your statement that NRA Executive V.P. Wayne La Pierre was "brazen to contend that President Clinton is willing to accept a certain level of killing to further his political agenda."
What is abortion? It kills a million plus unborn babies in this country every year and for no good reason but to keep him and those with his "political agenda" in power.
Didn't the president, the members of Congress and Janet Reno take an oath to uphold the Constitution? Advocating taking our guns and gun owning rights is nothing less than treason.
When one takes an oath to uphold the Constitution, do they have a right to pick and choose what parts they will uphold? I think not!
For those of you who think the government should have all the guns, I suggest that you go live in Iran, Iraq, North Korea or China. When someone gets shot in those countries, they are usually wearing a blindfold and it is called justice.
Thanks a lot
I would like to take the opportunity to thank the Crosby-Ironton school board and Mr. Gerald Wallin for guaranteeing that our district will no longer attract quality teachers to our area. You have more than likely guaranteed that many of our current quality teachers will look elsewhere. It is good to know that you are sensitive to the future of our school district and the future of a good quality education for our children. Of course, if we needed the money for sports we would have no problem providing the funds. Good to know that our priorities are in order. Thanks again.

Story deserved better
I have occasionally noticed when I page through Dispatch Classified Ads (Sunday Edition) that there are newsworthy articles inside the back page(s) of that section. This week was a good example. The column by Laura Sessions Stepp, "Drowsiness an overlooked danger for teen drivers," belongs in Section A with other news articles. Perhaps lives could be saved if that article received better visibility.
I am sure that you could put other advertisement in the classified section so that news articles would not have to be printed there.
