Aitkin schools, Brainerd church receive grants

The Otto Bremer Foundation awarded a $10,000 grant to the Aitkin School District in January for the Kids Plus program's work to help adults better value youths as a community asset.

The foundation also awarded the First Presbyterian Church in Brainerd a $10,000 grant for the Seventh Star Lounge, an after-school program for teens.

Northern Pines receives grant

Northern Pines Mental Health Center, Brainerd, was awarded a $68,600 grant by the Bush Foundation toward the capital needs of a chemical dependency treatment program.

The Bush Foundation, a regional grant-making foundation, is involved with major programs in education, health, human services, the arts, and the development of individual leadership and talent. Primary consideration is given to grant requests in Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota. The Bush Foundation was established by Mr. and Mrs. Archibald Granville Bush in 1953.

Brainerd school meetings listed

The Brainerd School District's building committee will meet at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 29, at Washington Middle School. Members will tour the school plus Franklin Junior High School.

The curriculum committee will meet at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 26, at the district office to discuss vocational overview and to tour Brainerd High School.

The committee of the whole will meet at 11:30 a.m. April 5 and the school board will meet April 10.

Premier Fitness members help St. Jude's hospital

BAXTER -- Premier Fitness members in Baxter worked out for their health and for the children at St. Jude's Children's Hospital on Feb. 26.

Participants at the Feb. 26 benefit raised more than $600 for St. Jude's. They exercised to earn pledges and joined Premier Fitness instructors for the two-hour workout.

Free mammograms available for eligible women

ST. CLOUD -- A Women's Health Day offering mammograms/clinical breast exams, Pap tests and pelvic exams is set from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Tri-Cap Family Planning Center at 1411 West Germain St. in St. Cloud.

Appointments are necessary and exams are free for eligible women. To be eligible for free screenings, women must be 40 or older, meet income guidelines and either have no health insurance, insurance with unmet income guidelines or insurance that does not cover screening.

This event is part of a statewide program to increase the number of screenings in eligible women and is sponsored by the Minnesota Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program, Sherburne and Sterns county public health, The Breast Center at St. Cloud Hospital and Tri-Cap Family Planning Center. This is the fourth year Women's Health Day has been offered in St. Cloud and it will be offered on a quarterly basis.

Friends of Library to hold book sale

The Friends of the Brainerd Public Library will hold its spring used book sale from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
