Recently, a Vox Pop writer had a concern about the school board's decision to build angled parking on the west side of the Washington Educational Services building. To set the record straight, here are the facts. The city of Brainerd will be reconstructing Eighth St. as part of their summer road construction projects. The school district will be assessed $12,000 for their section of the Eighth St. project. Parking has been a major issue around Washington for quite some time. The additional $24,000 will be taken out of our capital budget to build the angled parking. It will double the number of parking spaces on the west side of the building. The money in the capital budget can only be used for building or site improvements. The state will not allow us to transfer money back and forth between the capital or facilities fund and the general fund or vice versa. We had an opportunity to team with the city to get this job done now and we supported it. As a school board, our primary goal for the future is to reduce class sizes. This project will not deter us from that vision.

Tax those bonuses
There is a very simple way to legally recover the bonuses paid to executives that "We the People" have bailed out. Pass a law that places a 100 percent tax on executive bonuses for companies that took public bailout funds, retroactive to the date of the bailout. Disallow any deductions to the special tax, and viola you have just legally recovered the bonus money, no lawsuits, no problem. If the executives are unhappy they can fight the IRS over the tax. The federal government in their own view has virtually unlimited power to tax, well lets put this power to good use and recover the "People's" money. If they get enough congressional votes to pass it, President Obama couldn't even veto it. This should make the Democrats very happy, after all, they've never seen a tax they don't like! Write your Congressman!
Curious and dumbfounded
I wonder why our government doesn't enforce the law that covers illegal aliens with a more concerted effort. The law is plain enough. I can understand their seeking a better life, but it shouldn't be at the expense of our unemployed citizens.
Our government is at fault, but can stop the invasion by putting a stop to hiring illegal aliens. We need identity cards similar to driver's licenses and Social Security. With no excuse of identity, businesses would discontinue hiring illegal aliens or those in charge should suffer jail time is much more effective for fat cats. Greed for cheap labor would supersede fines but fat cats would think twice about spending time in the slammer.
The billions of dollars spent every year attempting to stop illegal drugs from entering our country has put the horse behind the cart. We are told that stopping illegal drugs from entering our country is literally impossible as the profits are so great that the drugs would continue to enter in spite of the risk. Poppycock, we can save billions by tossing the drug buyers in lock ups. Since drug users are not dangerous criminals they could be housed in barracks placed in a warm fertile area. Their cost could be minimal as they could raise their own vegetables, grow their own grain and cook three meals daily of vegetables so healthy that the incarcerated junkies would be reluctant to return for another and longer vegetable diet plus the long hours gardening. The chosen area will require no heat or air conditioning.
These suggestions are feasible and would save billions if implemented. A fraction of 1 percent of the money saved would make me a very rich man.

He'll help with the math
"Government is not reason; it is not eloquent; it is force. Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master." -George Washington.
Housing prices nationally have declined over 26 percent. It would seem, then, that we can expect our property taxes to decline by the same amount.
With many people unemployed or taking a reduction in their wages, I am confident that our local taxing authorities will reduce county expenses by the same 26 percent.
I urge the county commissioners to voluntarily take a 26 percent salary reduction themselves. All other government employees (including teachers and law enforcement) whose income is derived from our property tax dollars should also take a salary reduction of the same amount. Any person not taking the pay cut can be replaced by those unemployed who are willing to work for 75 percent of the present salaries.
There are many competent unemployed people that would be happy to work for the 75 percent figure. To paraphrase President Obama, "We have to work together to solve this problem."
If the county commissioners need any help with the math or where to cut employees I am more than willing to offer suggestions.

God still controls the universe
We now hear and read a lot about "global warming, go green, etc." Many intellects and our government leaders are leading us to believe our destiny in global warming is in our hands. I believe God, not man, is still in control of this universe. We humans may contribute to the global warming, but we are not in control.
The universe was created so the sun would orbit through its vast expanse every 26,000 years. In December of 2012 the sun will complete one orbit and will be positioned approximately in the center of the galaxy containing the Milky Way. I've heard of no weather reports dating back that far to give us details of what happened at that time. The scientific community tells us that at about that time the ice age disappeared and possibly there was some affect on the formation of the Sahara desert. Since man was not involved in factory or auto emission, large scale use of fossil fuels, etc., that warming trends was completely in God's control. If history really repeats itself, we will probably we in a warming trend for a few more years and the potential drought effects could be extremely severe.
The scientific community also tells us that, in the past, the earth's two magnetic poles have switched polarities for reasons unknown. It should be interesting to see what effect electro-magnetic forces set up by the alignment of the heavenly bodies have on the earth's two magnetic poles. In a worst case scenario, we will have a lot of problems with our communication systems.
I believe it is likely that the human species may see natural events occur over the next few years that have not been encountered since our creation.
Secret ballot threatened
I am concerned at the changes that are emerging before our very eyes under Obama. I refer to those "changes" that claim to be for the good of society, yet strip away more of our precious personal freedoms granted by the Constitution.
For instance, Congress is now addressing the so-called "Freedom of Choice" act, or the Card Check. This bill forces private business to bend to union organizers in their own shops. It is not up to union organizers to decide. Employers and working people jointly decide; employers by their preferences, employees by personally deciding for themselves if a job is fair paying or not.
That idea in itself makes Card Check a further invasion of the workplace.
The really menacing part, however, is the "open vote" it calls for. American culture was created and preserved under the safety and sanctity of the secret ballot. The secret ballot allows people to vote their conscience and preference without fear of pressure or retaliation. From anyone, union or employer. Now we're being asked to believe that open ballots are for the workers' protection. Nonsense. This is about government controlling the workers and the workplace through unions they endorse.
Don't allow feigned concern for workers to take away our historic right to secret vote. Why?
If we let this pass, I predict that very soon, the socialist pattern will tell us, "We do it in the workplace. Why not have an "open vote" in our local and national elections as well?"
We will then join the ranks of citizens under Hugo Chavez and Kim Il Jong, where their pressured voting always magically re-elects the same despots with 100 percent of the vote. I urge you to call your congressmen and senator in Washington D.C. today to vote this bill down.
