Brainerd Squirts take title

The Tanner Motors Squirt A hockey team of Brainerd captured the championship at the Fargo International Squirt tournament Feb. 24-27.

Brainerd outscored its opponents 24-4 in four games.

Brainerd beat Devils Lake, N.D., 9-0 in the opening game and followed with a 4-1 win over the Fargo, N.D., Raiders. Brainerd beat the West Fargo, N.D., Packers 6-1 in the semifinals. In the title game Brainerd breezed past the Bismarck, N.D., Winterhawks 5-2.

Leading the way for Brainerd was Mitchell McLain, who scored nine goals and assisted on five others. Gavin Motschenbacher scored five goals and Daulton Olinger had four. Zach Holmen collected four assists.

Goalie Jared Stearns had a stellar showing between the pipes as he stopped 49 shots.

The tournament featured 80 teams from the United States and Canada.
