Betty J. Ward, age 89, of Brainerd, died Wednesday, March 16, 2005, at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd. Services will be private with interment at Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Camp Ripley.
Betty Jean Haberle was born May 27, 1915, in East Orange, N.J., one of 11 children born to Frank and Marylee (Quigley) Haberle. At the age of 17, she moved to California to live with her oldest sister. It was there that she met her future husband, William T. Ward, a Mankato native who was working with her brother at Lake Tahoe. They were united in marriage in Pasadena on Oct. 4, 1940. Betty lived and raised their family in Pasadena, while William served in both WWII and the Korean conflict. Following his military discharge she did secretarial work for Douglas Aircraft. William and Betty moved to Motley following their retirement in 1970. Betty was an active and independent lady. She enjoyed gardening and berry-picking, fishing, knitting and her dog, Suzie. She was very proud of her children's and grandchildren's accomplishments. She lived with her son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Carol, in Brainerd for two years before moving to Harmony House a year ago.
Betty is survived by her children, Michael Ward, of Brainerd, and Marylee Kerr, of Stafford Springs, Conn.; two nieces, Belma Trout and Margie Olson, both of Motley; five grandchildren, Colleen Root, of Roseville, Calif., William A. Ward, of Phoenix, Katherine Ward, of Sacramento, Calif., Nancy Kerr, of Washington, D.C., and William Kerr, stationed at Davis Air Force Base, Calif.; and two great-grandchildren. Her parents, her husband and 10 siblings preceded her in death.
