BHS mock trial team takes part in its first state tournament
Brainerd High School's mock trial team, participating in its first state tournament Tuesday and Wednesday in St. Paul, ran into stiff competition and ended up 0-3 in competition.
"We were really rookies down there," assistant coach Janell Carlson said Thursday. "We were the only ones who had never been to state."
She said the students learned a lot and had a great time.
"It was a really positive experience," she said.
The team presented both the prosecution and defense sides of a fictional case involving the murder of a homeless woman.
The team includes Natasha Leyk, Jennifer Dens, Chris Rice and Erin Twamley as lawyers; Ashton Madsen, Sarah Eiesland and Emily O'Rourke as prosecution witnesses; and John Valesano, Megan Saley and Alisa Madsen as defense witnesses.
Coaches are Dave Lashomb and Carlson. Attorneys who helped coach the team include Brad Person, Brook Mallack, Wayne Van Tassel and Tiffanee Ehrman.
