20 years ago (1990)

How can you miss 10 of 17 free throws, including the front end of seven one-and-ones, and still win? Simple. Rebound well and shoot 50 percent from the floor. Thus the Warriors managed a 67-64 win over St. Cloud Apollo in the sub-region finals.

30 years ago (1980)

(Photo) Dan Steffen of Brainerd this morning used an unusual pose during his attempt to break the world's record of 216 straight hours of playing pinball. Here, Steffen uses his heel to operate the flippers. Playing 28 games an hour he has already played 46 hours.

40 years ago (1970)

Merle Storm, of North Sixth Street, was named second ward alderman in a 5-1 vote by the Brainerd City Council. Storm, a produce manager at Super Valu, was chosen over Ben Schultes, the only other applicant for the job created by the death of Norval Anderson.

60 years ago (1950)

(Adv.) Opens Sunday at the Brainerd Theatre: "Sands of Iwo Jima," starring John Wayne, John Agar and Forrest Tucker. The Marines' Greatest Hour, featuring flag raising survivors: Rene Gagnon, Ira Hayes and John "Doc" Bradley.

80 years ago (1930)

A fortnight hence the American Legion Auxiliary band, under the direction of Miss Effie Drexler, will give its third annual concert at the high school auditorium. The program will feature a piccolo solo by Georgia Brown and a whistling solo featuring Edna Wright.

100 years ago (1910)

Mrs. Fred Billings was surprised at the home of her daughter by about 30 of her friends to celebrate her 30th wedding anniversary. Mr. Billings was absent due to his job as railroad engineer, proving the statement that the groom is of no consequence at a wedding.
