UTICA, NY - Becky Skiba scored 20 points and pulled down 13 rebounds in Saturday's seventh-place game of the NJCAA Division III national tournament, but it was not enough to overcome Holyoke Community College in 59-48 loss.
"Poor shooting again was a huge factor in the loss," Raider coach Dennis Eastman said, "In the second half they shot 46 percent and we shot 19 percent. We had an eight-point lead and shot decently in the first half, but it was just a tale of two halves."
Taking a 29-21 lead into halftime the Raiders were outscored by the Cougars 38-19 in the second half with HCC not taking its first lead until nearly nine and a half minutes in.
"The game was close pretty much the whole way until the last few minutes," Eastman said. "We got into foul trouble and they started hitting their free throws and kind of pulled away at the end."
The loss caps the Raiders national tournament run.
"It was a great experience to go out there. Coming home we know we can play at that level," said Eastman. "Its a little bit frustrating that we never did play like we were capable of, but the experience is the most important thing. The girls learned if they keep working hard good things will come."
