WALKER -- Cass County will participate this summer with Minnesota DNR in a survey of recreational trails users in the Foothills State Forest area.
Results of the survey will be used to determine types of uses people make of the forest and recreational opportunities there. The quantity of users also will be recorded.
Trip characteristics, activities, experiences, use problems and support or opposition to forest management will be recorded.
Results will be used in future requests to the Legislature for trails development funding, maintenance and law enforcement. Two part-time employees will conduct the survey.
Minnesota DNR will hold a public meeting from 6 to 9 p.m. April 6 at Pillager High School to discuss the proposal to classify as closed for recreational motor vehicle use the Pillsbury State Forest.
Copies of the DNR proposal are available on the DNR Web site at www.state.mn.us under "What's New," then "Forest Road and Trail Designation."
Commissioner Jim Demgen, who recently returned from a National Association of Counties conference, reported Washington County is the only Minnesota county so far to ban all-terrain vehicles from roadside ditch riding.
