A three-goal third period helped the South Suburban Flyers defeat the Brainerd Warriors 5-0 in the quarterfinals of the state adapted floor hockey tournament Friday at Bloomington Jefferson High School.
South Suburban led just 2-0 entering the third.
"We played two pretty good periods of floor hockey," Warriors coach Bruce Thompson said. "Maybe in the third our guys got a little tired.
"(South Suburban) got a lucky bounce on one goal (in the third), the other two were legitimate. That broke our backs a little bit."
Matt Ellenberger scored two goals for the Flyers. Josh McGill added a goal and two assists. Michaela Smith and Chris Woodley each scored once for the Flyers.
Anna Wahl made 13 saves for the Warriors, who outshot South Suburban 20-15.
South Suburban 5, Warriors 0
The key: The Flyers scored three goals in the third period.
Records: Brd 8-5, SS 10-2-1.
Next: Brainerd vs. Minneapolis South in consolation semifinals at 9 a.m. Saturday at Bloomington Jefferson, consolation championship 12:15 p.m. Saturday.
"We did a good job clearing in our defensive end, which we had trouble doing earlier," Thompson said, "but as we tried to put pressure on their goal their front-side defense would pop out and take away our shooting lanes. We had some good shots on goal from our wings. We just couldn't get anything in. We had a number of near-misses.
"I have to credit (South Suburban) for playing good defense. They probably have the two best chair goalies we've seen all year and their front line was good. We did not play badly. We have everyone back next year so we have a lot to gain. Hopefully, our kids will learn from this, learn the little things that will put us over the hump.
"I was not disappointed in how our kids played. They played very well."
