20 years ago (1989)

Solid Waste Officer Carter Kuehn told the county board it had a current problem and might have a bigger one. Because a neighboring landfill had closed, Morrison County and Camp Ripley are seeking to dump their garbage at the Crow Wing County landfill.

30 years ago (1979)

A fluoridation compromise aimed at preventing the placement of fluoride into Brainerd's water system was rejected yesterday by Dr. George Pederson, Minnesota's health commissioner.

40 years ago (1969)

An impressive golden key mounted in a plastic-topped box was presented to the King's Mayor of East London, South Africa, by 16-year-old Nancy Pedersen of Brainerd, a foreign student there. The key was a gift from the mayor and people of Brainerd.

60 years ago (1949)

Over 1,100 Crow Wing County farmers today have witnessed the Minnesota Dairy and Poultry Show at the Brainerd armory. The show has already visited 35 Minnesota communities and goes to Wadena next.

80 years ago (1929)

Big Bill Beth, the heavyweight wrestler who tumbled the boys around the mat here in Brainerd, and in his hometown of Pequot, is doing the same in Hollywood movies. He has been typecast as a bad man in many screen thrillers, glaring at his prostate victims.

100 years ago (1909)

A. E. Whitney started in this morning to hang paper in the sheriff's office and to re-varnish the woodwork. A new hardwood floor will be laid, so Sheriff Reed will have comfortable and handsome quarters.
