Brainerd International Raceway has announced its 2004 racing schedule, which features new events and changes to others.
The most significant addition is the NASCAR 300, a NASCAR AutoZone Elite Division, Midwest Series, race scheduled Aug. 20-22. It will feature a $100,000 prize purse, plus series points for drivers. The race is expected to attract as many as 50 drivers, with qualifying rounds scheduled Aug. 20-21 and the final Aug. 22, which will be a 60-lap, 180-mile finale.
The NASCAR 300 is the weekend following the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals, scheduled Aug. 12-15. The NHRA Nationals bring together the top drag racers and features 6,000-horsepower nitro-burning Top Fuel Dragsters and Top Fuel Funny Cars that are capable of 330 mph runs.
Names like John Force, Larry Dixon, Tony Schumacher, Whit Bazemore, Greg Anderson, Warren Johnson and Angelle Savoie are annual fixtures at this event, which draws more than 100,000 fans.
Last year, BIR introduced the Big Race, an all-motorcycle drag race that pairs Harley-Davidson and imports (Suzuki, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Honda, etc.). This year's event has a new twist -- the first two days July 30-31 will be reserved for Harleys during an All-Harley Drag Racing Association sanctioned national points race. Winners from each class will compete against the imports on Sunday of that weekend.
In last year's event, Larry "Spiderman" McBride broke a world record on his nitro-burning Top Fuel bike. His 5.883-second run broke the world record he set two years ago of 5.895 seconds. McBride has already committed to the event again this summer.
The American Motorcycle Association's Chevy Trucks Superbike Classic returns June 24-27. This is BIR's most popular non-drag racing event. It features the world's fastest superbike racers who fly around BIR's road course at speeds near 200 mph on the mile-long straightaway.
The Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series returns June 3-6. This event features the top drivers from the NHRA's 11-state Midwest division who compete for circuit points in Top Alcohol Dragsters and Funny Cars, as well as a variety of Sportsman classes. Last year, a national record fell in the Top Alcohol Dragster class.
Three other races are returning to BIR as well: Thunder at the Lakes (Memorial Day weekend), the Pleasure Land RV Center Show and Go (Fourth of July weekend) and the Coca-Cola Muscle Car Shootout (Sept. 3-5), the last two of which feature car shows as well.
Thunder at the Lakes is one of the largest Sportsman races in the country that weekend and features a $50,000 prize purse. The Wednesday Night Street Drags return to BIR's schedule for the fourth consecutive year. On nine Wednesday nights, BIR will open the track to anyone with a muffled, street-legal car.
Returning for the second year will be Lawn Mower Racing, a growing motorsport that features several different classes of riding lawn mowers.
