WAXHAW, N.C. -- Deborah Ann Johnson, 44, Waxhaw, N.C., died Monday, March 5, 2001, at home.
She was born July 26, 1956, in Fergus Falls to Donald and Doris (Rosendahl) Berg. At 2, her family moved to Brainerd where she attended school until the fourth grade. Then her family moved to Paynesville, where she graduated from high school in 1975. She attended cosmetology school at Wadena Technical College and worked in Fergus Falls for a short time before working toward her elementary education degree at St. Paul Bible College. She graduated from there in 1982 and held two teaching positions in Minnesota before accepting a teaching position at Redwood Christian School in Castro Valley. She married Jeff Johnson on Aug. 3, 1985. They were accepted as missionaries by Wycliffe Bible Translators in 1986. Their first assignment was in Liberia, West Africa, but they were forced to leave there in 1990 because of civil war there. They went to Bagabag, Philippines, in 1992. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1996. She lived with her family in Waxhaw, N.C., since 1997. She was a member of the Wadena Christian and Missionary Alliance Church.
Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Rebekah, Rachel and Ruth; her parents, of Wadena; her grandmother, Anna Pierson, Wadena; two sisters, Diane Berg, Wadena, and Donna Walker, Lake Crystal; and two brothers, Dave Berg, Brooklyn Center, and Mike Berg, Brooklyn Park.
Her grandfathers, Fred Rosendahl and John Berg, a grandmother, Jennie Berg, and a stepgrandfather, Art Pierson, died earlier.
Services were at the Wadena Christian and Missionary Alliance Church with the Rev. Bert LeBrun and the Rev. Murray Jacobson officiating. Burial will be in Leaf River Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to El Rophe Center, PO Box 327, Waxhaw, N.C. 28173.
Arrangements were with Bielema Family Funeral Home in Wadena.
