ROCHESTER -- Funeral services for Judith E. Cunningham will be held Tuesday, March 15, 2005, at 1 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Brainerd. The Reverend Glenn Derby will officiate. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Brainerd. Mrs. Cunningham, 85, of Rochester, died Thursday, March 10, 2005, at Rochester Health Care East. She had been ill with ALS.
Judith Swelland was born Dec. 26, 1919, in Brainerd. She married James W. Cunningham in Brainerd on Oct. 1, 1939. Mr. Cunningham was a captain with the Minnesota Highway Patrol. He died in 1971. Judy was a charter member of the first graduating class of Southwest State University in Marshall. She became a teacher in Marshall, and then taught in Milroy, Minn. Following a move to Rochester, Judy became the librarian at Lourdes High School until her retirement.
She is survived by her daughter, Sandi (James) Beier, of Rochester; a son, Kevin (and fiancee, Connie) Cunningham, of Alexandria, Minn.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Shirley Schwietz, of Woodbury, Minn.; and a half brother, Dennis Swelland, who resides in Florida.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Cunningham; parents, Oliver and Myrtle Swelland; a son, Gary; a grandson, Mark; a brother, Rudy Swelland; and a stepsister.
Friends may call Sunday, March 13, from 4-7 p.m. at Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Homes in Rochester. The visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church in Brainerd on Tuesday. Memorials preferred to ALS Foundation.
