Impola in running for hockey award

Carol Impola of Brainerd is one of 10 women nominated for Minnesota's best hockey mom award, sponsored by Red Baron Pizza.

One of the top 10 moms will receive a trip for two to the Hawaiian island of her choice.

The top 10 moms, including the grand-prize trip winner, will be recognized at the WCHA Final Five Friday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Region Golden Gloves tournament Saturday

The Region 4 Golden Gloves Boxing Tournament is set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Wadena Armory.

Region 4 consists of boxers from Wadena, Fergus Falls, Brainerd, St. Cloud, Willmar, Detroit Lakes, Bemidji, Frazee and Pine River.

There will be bouts in classes A and B and junior divisions.

Class A boxers from Brainerd will be Ricky Aulie (139 pounds) and Jay Porter (165).

Dan Soukup of Pine River is entered at 165.

Wadena's Class A entrants will be Dustin Comeau (106 pounds), T.J. Steward (147) and Pat Simmons (heavyweight).

Junior boxers from Wadena include Cody McManigle (125), Dewayne Steward (139), Mike Kern (147), Brent Steward (69) and Dustin Hill (147).

Class A champions advance to the Northern Minnesota Boxoff March 30 Wadena Armory.

Special Olympians compete in basketball

Special Olympians from Brainerd Public Schools competed in the Area 5 Basketball Individual Skills Contest March 7 at New York Mills

Brainerd Senior High -- 1-Joe Schmutzer; 3-Brandon Jabs; 4-Jennifer Juaire, Matt Rudolph; 6-Chris Pfanz; 8-Bergen Hanson.

Mississippi Horizons -- 2-Meghan Zellmer; 3-Amanda Albertson, Amanda Borg; 4-Zac Lively; 5-Kayla Demo, Clifton Straw; 6-Brandon Bryant, Jesse Schlichting, Jenny Witt; 7-Noah Bailey.
