A record 130 senior and junior high students from Brainerd participated in the 10th annual Sertoma Sunrise Warrior Liftathon on March 1-2 at the Brainerd High School weight room.
Participants raised money for disadvantaged people in the Brainerd area, and also competed for T-shirts based upon Most Pounds Per Ounce guidelines.
MPPO is a measure of a lifter's strength relative to body size, and is determined by taking a one-repetition maximum lift in the bench press, power clean, and parallel squat. The three lifts are added together and divided by the lifter's body weight to determine MPPO.
Thirty-seven boys met or exceeded the 4.0 MPPO standard necessary to earn a T-shirt. The top MPPO was attained by junior Andrew Larson at 5.41. Competing at 134 pounds, Larson bench pressed 200, power cleaned 200, and had a parallel squat of 325.

Ten girls exceeded the 2.75 standard necessary to earn a T-shirt. The top MPPO was attained by senior Crystal Yaunick at 4.05. Yaunick defended her MPPO title with a bench press of 135, power clean of 140, and parallel squat of 170. She joins Trista Oseland (1991-92) and Emilie Petersen (1994-95) as two-time girls MPPO champions.

The top maximum lifts for girls: bench press, Julie Moran and Alisha Thomas (145); power clean, Julie Moran (185); and parallel squat, Ashley Rodriquez (290). Moran's 185 power clean broke the all-time previous best power clean record of 170 pounds that she had shared with Chris Langer. Rodriquez' parallel squat of 290 pounds broke the all-time record of 270 pounds previously held by Jennifer Schley.
Larson and Yaunick were recognized as the best boys' and girls' lifters based upon their top MPPO performances.

The Sertoma Sunrise Club will select two participants as recipients of the Liftathon scholarship fund. Each person chosen will receive a $250 scholarship. Applicants must be a senior and minimum two-year Liftathon participant. Selections will be announced in May.
