The Brainerd Jaycees did it again.
The service club's 10th annual Ice Fishing Extravaganza raised a record $193,546.51 this year, up from last year's record total of $131,270.22.
Seventy percent or $134,482.56 of this amount will go to Camp Confidence, making it the biggest check the camp for persons with developmental disabilities has ever received.
"That was unbelievable," Jeff Olson, executive director of the camp said today of the Thursday night check presentation. "That's definitely the largest single donation we've ever received from a service club."
Olson said the big donation would allow Camp Confidence's other donations to be used to help improve facilities.
"I had faith in them (the Jaycees) but that's a huge percentage increase," he said. "That's going to sponsor 2,500 camper days."
Without the camp's association with the Jaycees, Olson said it would not be operating as a year-round facility today.
"Seven years ago we were deep in debt and we were scrambling to keep our doors open," Olson said.
In addition to the Jaycees, 61 other non-profit agencies will benefit from the Jan. 22 event. Iain Olness presented the check at the Jaycees' monthly meeting Thursday.
"Everyone should be proud of this event," Olness said in a statement issued today. "There are a lot of Jaycees who work hard to plan and pull it together, but we couldn't do it without the support of the community."
The 2000 team champions were W.W. Thompson Concrete. Team captain Todd Thompson designated Camp Confidence as the recipient of the $1,000.
Next year's event will be chaired by Ed Vobejda. It's tentatively scheduled for Jan. 20. Anyone interested in becoming involved may contact Vobejda at 829-7164.
