The city of Brainerd has distributed taxi service proposals to nine potential service providers in hopes of restoring taxi service to Brainerd by mid-April. The proposal says that two vehicles must be provided and must offer 24-hour service, 365 days a year.
30 years ago (1980)
(Photo) Bruce Thompson has been named head wrestling coach at Brainerd High School to replace Jerry Benson. Thompson, 27, has spent three years as Brainerd junior high coach, followed by three seasons as junior varsity coach.
40 years ago (1970)
The campaign to raise $500,000 in pledges toward the building project at St. Joseph's Hospital has reached the halfway point, with the deadline just three days away, said Mayor George Bedard, drive chair. Many solicitors have yet to report back.
60 years ago (1950)
Three men are in jail today on charges of burglarizing cottages in the Wilson Bay area of Gull Lake over several months. The three, all of rural Brainerd, were apprehended for stealing outboard motors, fishing equipment, golf clubs and ammunition.
80 years ago (1930)
Going into an overtime period the Crosby-Ironton team won by a 27-24 score over Brainerd to take the 11th district tournament and move into the region tourney. Brainerd scored a moral victory since, rated underdogs, they managed a 22-22 tie in regulation.
100 years ago (1910)
The plans for Brainerd's new post office have arrived and show the building will be an ornament to the city. The 55 by 72 foot building will be of rough red brick trimmed with sandstone. It will face Sixth Street but also have an entrance from Maple Street.
