Hornets nip Laporte in opening round

LAPORTE -- The ninth-seeded Lake Region Christian School Hornets of Baxter nipped No. 8 Laporte 49-47 in the opening round of the East Subsection 6, Class 1A boys' basketball tournament Monday.

Ben Mowers scored 23 points and Luke Erickson 16 to lead the Hornets, who overcame a 22-17 halftime deficit by outscoring Laporte 32-25 in the second half.

"We played very good defense to win the game," LRCS coach Joel Newton said. "(Mowers and Erickson) had some big three-pointers at the right time."
