EAST GULL LAKE -- About 200 students from around the state traveled to the Brainerd lakes area Tuesday and Wednesday to compete in the Minnesota State Academic Decathlon at Cragun's Resort and Conference Center.
Teams took tests and oral quizzes in language and literature, speech, social science, economics, mathematics, music and art. The winners will travel to the national competition later this year.
Mankato East finished in first place and will go to nationals with 37,295 points.
Other team scores were: St. Peter, second, 34,360; Mankato West, third, 32,851; North, fourth, 30,490; International Falls, fifth, 28,565; Grand Rapids, sixth, 26,288; Fridley, seventh, 21,585; and Worthington, eighth, 21,088.
Ben VanderSluis of Mankato East held the trophy while his teammates adorned the trophy with their good luck mascot.
Smaller schools competed in a different division and their scores were: Lake of the Woods, first, 34,153; Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial, second, 31,574; Littlefork-Big Falls, third, 29,265; Windom, fourth, 27,465; Red Rock Central, fifth, 27,443; Maccray, sixth, 27,236; Hermantown, seventh, 25,343; and Rockford, eighth, 11,100.
