Participants will include 100 boys and 48 girls in grades 8-12. There are 14 fund-raising teams with 10-11 lifters per team. The average projected lift range is 4,000 to 6,000 pounds per team.
Lifts will include bench press, parallel squat and power clean. Each team will be captained by a Sertoma Sunrise Club member, who will seek pledges from the community on behalf of their team.
The Liftathon raises funds for disadvantaged people in the Brainerd area, and raises funds for improvements in School District 181 weight rooms.
Scholarships will be awarded. Applicants must be a senior and minimum two-year Liftathon participant.
Participants may also compete for T-shirts based upon Most Pounds Per Ounce guidelines. MPPO is a measure of a lifter's overall body strength in relation to body size. The lifter's one-repetition maximum effort in each lift is added together, then divided by the person's body weight to determine MPPO.
T-shirts are awarded for MPPO performance level. The boys' standard is 4.0 or greater for lifters with a body weight of 250 pounds or less and 3.50 or more for lifters with a body weight of more than 250. The girls' standard is 2.75 or more. T-shirts are also awarded to lifters who have participated in the Liftathon a minimum of three years.
The Warrior Wall is a display area next to the high school weight room that recognizes the top 10 all-time best MPPO, bench press, parallel squat and power clean performances for boys and girls since the Liftathon began in 1991. With a competitive field of participants, several record performances are expected at this year's event.
The event is free and open to the public.
