Brainerd's Jared Anderson inched closer to a second state championship following his performance in the prelims of the Class 2A swim meet Friday night at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center.
Anderson won his heat in the breaststroke at 56.61 and was second overall heading into Saturday night's finals. He trails Kendrick Bachman of Rochester John Marshall by 71/100ths of a second.
Bachman's time was a 2A state meet record, eclipsing the previous record of 55.94 set in 2005.
"Jared went one full second faster than he went last week in the section meet," Warriors coach John Zemke said.
Anderson also qualified for the finals in the 200 individual medley with an eighth-place prelim time of 1:57.67.

The 400 free relay of Goll, Rudstrom, Larson and Reese qualified for the finals with a seventh-place finish in prelims.
"It was a decent day," Zemke said. "We went faster in just about every event. Guys who we thought had a chance to make the finals did and a couple of guys dropped a couple spots.
