20 years ago (1989)

Brainerd officials have identified assistant city engineer Jeff Hulsether as a potential candidate for the vacant position of city engineer. His appointment would eliminate the need to seek new applicants for the position.

30 years ago (1979)

Two agents from the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension met resistance from police administrators here while conducting a probe into alleged police brutality. County attorney Steve Rathke initiated the request for an investigation.

40 years ago (1969)

George Bedard, president of the newly formed United Fund Organization, told the Exchange club about the newly formed group's plans. It would replace both the Business and Professional Men's Charities drive and various charity drives in residential areas.

60 years ago (1949)

Lt. Gov. C. Elmer Anderson and family, returning to St. Paul from Brainerd, were slightly injured when their car, traveling south, was hit by a truck. Anderson reports that his wife is recovering from head and ankle injuries; daughter Patricia was uninjured.

80 years ago (1929)

Johnnie Beck, colorful Brainerd wrestler, who has engaged in more than 150 bouts throughout the Northwest, today extended a challenge to any wrestler in the world who will weigh in at 130 pounds. He particularly challenges Fred Ross of Pequot.

100 years ago (1909)

One of the boldest bits of thievery ever perpetrated here was reported to the police Saturday. On the preceding night between four and six tons of coal was taken from the coal bin of the Imperial block in the heart of the city.
