Isle man, 41, struck, killed by snowmobile
ISLE - A 41-year-old Isle man was struck and killed by a snowmobile early Saturday while he was walking to his home from a party, the Mille Lacs Tribal Police Department reported.

BURGLARY - Kristine Stark, 600 block of F Street, Thursday reported her residence broken into.

Pee Wee B team wins district
The Brainerd Pee Wee B Blue hockey team became the first Brainerd B team to win a district championship Feb. 17-18 at Morris.

City council backs increase in funds for transportation
BAXTER - In order to address growing transportation needs, the city of Baxter is joining several cities across Minnesota in petitioning the Legislature for more funding through increased gas and vehicle registration taxes.

Hesner's husband charged

LITTLE FALLS - Five people were arrested Tuesday after officers from several law enforcement agencies executed search warrants at a Little Falls motel and recovered methamphetamine, mushrooms and marijuana, the Morrison County Sheriff's Department reported.

Medical care given to lakes area soldiers returning from war is first-class compared to the care soldiers have been receiving at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, area veterans' affairs officials said Tuesday.

The Brainerd Street Department will remove snow starting at 4 a.m. Tuesday on Oak Street from South Sixth Street to Highway 25 and on South Eighth Street from Washington to Quince streets.

20 years ago (1987) - Roger Heidelberger of Merrifield recently had a 1918 caboose moved to his property. He is equipping the caboose with wheels and installing tracks for it, and he plans to open it to the public as part of a small amusement park.

Site report casts doubt on Walker artifacts
Officials remain convinced the Walker archaeological site - where ancient stone tools may have been discovered - needs to be preserved, although the state archeologist says he believes most of the artifacts were created by nature and not by humans.

PINE RIVER - Marvin Zigmund, 82, of Pine River, died Monday, March 5, 2007, at St. Joseph's Medical Center, Brainerd. He was born March 26, 1924, in Pine River, to Harris and Olea (Ness) Zigmund. He graduated from Pine River High School.

CROSSLAKE - Robert J. Garin, 75, of Crosslake, passed away while on vacation in Laughlin, Nev., on Feb. 28, 2007. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 9, 2007, at Crosslake Lutheran Church with the Rev. Andy Smith officiating. There will be a visitation Thursday evening from 5-7 p.m. at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Crosslake. Interment will follow services at Pinewood Cemetery in Crosslake with military honors provided by American Legion Post No. 500. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. The family plans on creating a baseball memorial in Bob's name.

Floyd H. Britton
OAK LAWN TOWNSHIP - Floyd Henry Britton, age 93, resident of Oak Lawn Township, died Friday, March 2, 2007, at his home. Floyd was born July 31, 1913, to Henry and Lillie (Hoskins) Britton. He married Marguerite (Cornish) Zuelich on Feb. 7, 1944. He worked for 30 years as a tire repairman in Brainerd. Floyd loved to work in his garden. He grew, picked, sold and enjoyed strawberries.

To all the chronic complainers of snowplowing and road maintenance in general! The bottom line is: No matter how good a job our maintenance people do, they cannot make the roads "idiot proof."

Minnesotans treasure our parks and trails. But the conservation funding that helps make these special places the envy of the nation has dropped to its lowest level in 30 years. With another 1.2 million people expected to make Minnesota home in the next 25 years, even greater pressure is being placed on our parks and trails.

VOX POP
I'm confused. Prayer's not allowed in school. "Under God" is taken in and out of the Pledge of Allegiance, yet on the front page of the paper, Brainerd has public school buses taking kids out of school to transport them to a religious instruction program. What's wrong with this picture? You can't even pray but you're taken out of school when they should be in their regular classes.
